AGILTY TRAINING
Agility is a team sport where the owner and their dog navigate through a set of obstacles that are mapped out and numbered in a predetermined order. The goal is to complete the course safely and in the quickest time. Obstacles include a variety of jumps, tires, teeter, table, weave poles, dog walk and A-Frame. This sport requires a lot of initial training to get the dog and handler team used to working together and properly completing each obstacle on the course without faults. The Introduction to Agility class will introduce you and your dog to all the foundation skills necessary for the basics and more advanced levels as they move up in their training from Beginner agility to Competition. Intro To Agility Prerequisite: For dogs who have completed a basic obedience or puppy class. Dogs will learn the foundation skills and shadow handling necessary to get the dog working with you as team. Focus attention, motivation, communicating with your dog through body language and simple exercises to train your dog how to properly execute the obstacles will be addressed. Also exercises for warm ups and cool downs necessary will be taught as these are essential components for this high intensity sport. Beginner Agility Prerequisite: For dogs who have completed the Intro to Agility or similar class, or at the instructor’s discretion Basic handling skills and control will be improved. Handlers will learn the techniques to handle their dogs on both sides of their body using various handling maneuvers.Equipment will be practiced at a low height to build confidence in your dog while they are learning the skills. The dog and handler teams will continue to improve their foundation skills and become more proficient at combining a number of obstacles together. Dogs will start to perform the obstacles off leash and with mild distractions. Your dog must have a reliable recall, as well as having solid sit, down, and stay command. Novice Agility Prerequisite: For dogs that have completed Beginner AgilityIn this session we will continue to build on the foundations skills and increase the teamwork necessary for both dog and handler. Teams will learn to run short sequences consisting of at least 6 obstacles. Different change of side maneuvers will be introduced (front cross, rear cross, blind cross). Introduction to different patterns (180’s, 270’s, Get outs, Threadles) and Weave poles will be introduced. Intermediate Agility Prerequisite: For dogs who have successfully completed the Novice Agility or similar class, or at instructor’s discretion This class will prepare you and your dog for competition if you desire or to advance your team to the next level of skills. We will work on obstacle and handler focus skills, obstacle discrimination, jumping skills and distance handling skills. Dogs should be able to perform 12 weave poles without luring at this level. Dogs should be comfortable with being crated and crates are recommended to bring to class. Advanced/Competition Agility Prerequisite: For dogs who have successfully completed the Intermediate Agility or similar class, or at instructor’s discretion This class is designed to improve specific handling skills, perfect contact obstacle performances, work on distance, speed in weave poles and learn how to read course maps to find the best path for your team. At this level dogs must be able to run a full course of at least 20 obstacles at full height and perform 12 weaves independently. They must be able to work at a distance and be non-reactive towards other dogs or people. In this class we will run 20 obstacle sequences as well as shorter sequences to work on a specific skill such as pinwheels, straight lines, 180’s, 270’s, etc.. We will continue to work on focus attention, motivation games, speed, distance and accuracy.
