Prerequisite: For dogs who have completed their AKC CGC (Canine Good Citizen) and/or CGCA (Canine Good Citizen Advanced) or dogs with equal skills. Dogs must be able to work among dogs on leash and have a desire to work and please humans. This is not a class for reactive or shy dogs. The purpose of this class is to teach your dogs the skills necessary to pass a Therapy Dog test. Each week the dog/handler team will be guided through a series of tasks that will test their knowledge of specific skills and temperament qualities that are essential for the team to become a good therapy dog team. We focus on your dogs temperament and train them to respond appropriately to various environmental situations they may encounter as a therapy dog. Their basic obedience skills, level of control by the handler and polite leash manners are addressed in each class session. Your dog will learn how to approach people using medical equipment in an appropriate manner. They will also learn how to remain calm around children if they choose to get involved in any of the reading to children programs available. This class is taught by a certified Therapy Dog trainer.
